Couple stuck with tree

A couple who did not want a tree in front of their home saw it planted Wednesday, despite road markings made by a town worker last month indicating the Shade Tree Commission’s October decision had been reversed.

Eugene and Wilma Steinruck told the commission they did not want the responsibility of a tree. But the commission decided to plant one in front of their 325 W. Fifth St. home anyway.

They were among more than 50 property owners selected to get a free tree because there was room for one between the sidewalk and the curb.

Zoners OK temporary shelter in Berwick

The zoning hearing board Thursday unanimously approved a temporary warming shelter at the Eagle Hose Company, drawing cheers from advocates for the homeless and concerns from some of the neighbors.

“Please follow the rules; don’t make us sorry,” Chairman Eugene Golla told the volunteers who run the non-profit Community Resource Connections.

The decision came after a marathon 21⁄2-hour hearing in which several neighbors rose to object to the new shelter. They worried it would draw crime to the neighborhood.
